hot chocolateWell, we completely spoiled the secret ingredient… we are speaking about medicinal mushrooms! Feeling skeptical? Trust us: they will make your hot chocolate a great ally for your health, without compromising its delicious taste.

You may feel quite surprised: suggesting mushrooms for sweet recipes, hot drinks and even smoothies may sound a little weard. Obviously we are not talking about porcini mushrooms or champignons, instead we are referring to the extracts of some particular species, rich in nutrients and full of healing properties. These mushrooms are mostly used in Asia, a country with a thousands-year medicinal tradition, but they have been recently discovered by the western world too.

One of the most interesting projects focusing on healing mushrooms is Four Sigmatic by Tero Isokauppila, a Finnish “foodpreneur” (sounds like a great job, right?) dreaming of a world where the ancient history of medicinal fungi is completely appreciated and incorporated into contemporary lifestyle.

Mushrooms contain Vitamin D, B2, B3, they are full of precious antioxidant and, last but not least, selenium. They are universally known for their fatigue-relieving magic powers, but they can also help our bodies in many amazing ways: helping our immune system, supporting energy levels, increasing focus, protecting our organism from stress and developing general wellness.
Not bad, uh?


Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum): antioxidant, cardiotonic, improves the immunity system, helps memory, works as anti-depressant and tranquilizer.
Chaga (Inonotus oblique): known as the longevity mushroom, it gives physical strength and it’s s also used to cure some types of tumors.
Shitake (Lentinus edodes): works a a potent anti-bacterial and anti-viral, it has hepatoprotective and cholesterol-lowering properties and also protects teeth and gums.
Cordyceps (Cordyceps sinensis): a real tonic for fatigue, it’s also used for debilitating disease’s recovery. A little plus? It has anti-aging and aphrodisiac effects.

Serves: 2 Prep Time: Cooking Time:


  • - 1/2 cup of cocoa butter
  • - 3 tbsp of unsweetened cocoa powder
  • - 2 tbsp of coconut sugar (or xxylitol, if you're into sugar-free stuff)
  • - 2 tbsp of mushrooms extract of your choice (Chaga or Cordyceps)
  • - 1/4 cup of cashew (with a 6-hours soaking)
  • - 1/2 tsp of vanilla extract
  • - a pinch of salt


Stir all the ingredients together in a blender, with 2 teacups hot water. Mix at maximum speed for 20-30 seconds, or until the mixture reaches a nice creamy texture. Now you can taste your chocolate! And you can obviously add sweetener, cocoa or fungi extract according to your own personal tastes.
You can also add spices like cayenne pepper, cinnamon, hemp seeds, lucuma, vanilla or any other precious superfood you desire!


You can replace cocoa butter and powder with 70-80% cocoa dark chocolate.
