Face toners are usually underestimated -and generally little known. Most people think about them as a skincare “nice to have”, something that sits at the end of face cleansing. Someone believes they’re just one of the multiple steps of K-beauty routines. Others consider them just as another marketers’ gimmick.

Truth is, face toners can be very beneficial to skin, something we all should introduce into our beauty routine. Why? Read more below.

What the heck are face toners?

Face toners are water based liquid lotions. Old skool versions were formulated with a little alcohol to provide both an astringent and purifying action. Unfortunately alcohol has little to do with both of them as its drying effects might translate into disrupted sebum production and dry patches in the long run.

We believe the best and safest face toners are natural ones. These are infused with botanical ingredients and do not contain alcohol, surfactants or other potentially dangerous substances.

Hydrolates fall into this category, as they are obtained through the distillation of flowers and plants. Think about rose water, one of the best known and ancient form of face toner.

Some versions are enriched with hydration boosting ingredients – such as hyaluronic acid or balancing elements or exfoliating substances – such as fruit derived acids.

Why are face toners good for skin?

Maybe you thought that face toners where part of face cleansing, the final touch to remove any residual of dirt or cleanser…this is true, but only in part. Whilst a good toner is a great way to wash away any extra trace of cleansing products from your face, especially if you use oil based ones, it can be beneficial for your skin in many different ways.

1. Ph balancing action

Face toners contribute to balance the optimal Ph level of your skin, which is slightly acidic, after you wash your face. This is especially important as a naturally balanced Ph might regulate sebum production while keeping skin barriers strong.

2. Detox action

Your face is constantly exposed to toxins and potentially armful chemicals coming from the environment, such as pollution and smoke. Using a toner on a daily basis con support you to keep these aggressive elements at bay. Translating into a clearer, healthier complexion.

3. Astringent action

Astringent benefits are usually the most sought after when choosing a toner. Many good natural formula contain botanical ingredients that target excess sebum and enlarged pores, working on balancing and healing skin.

4. Hydrating and nurturing action

A good natural toner provides both hydration and nutrition to your skin through its water base combined with vitamin infused ingredients. It is also an excellent way to improve the absorption of serums, creams, oils and specific treatments.

5. Exfoliating action

Some face toners are enriched with natural acids for a light exfoliating action that will help you remove dead skin cells while boosting skin regeneration processes. Just save these type of products for your night routine as they could promote photosensitivity.

How to choose the best face toners based on ingredients and according to skin needs

Combination, oily and acne-prone skin will benefit from the antiseptic, astringent and balancing qualities of lavender, sage, hamamelis, mallow, peppermint, tea tree, eucalyptus, lemon and rosemary.

Dry skin will love the hydrating and nurturing properties of rose, orange blossom and aloe vera.

Mature skin will find its perfect match with ginseng, argan oil and rose damascena. Even better if paired with hyaluronic acid.

Sensitive skin will enjoy the soft and soothing touch of chamomile, aloe, cornflower and orange blossom.
